Alphabet's X Division Gives Birth To MALTA Inc., An Energy Storage Company.
Alphabet's X division harbors a multitude of experimental ideas. Project Malta was one of them. Malta utilizes easily obtainable abundant materials including salt, anti-freeze and steel to store power at grid scale.
Malta uses the laws of thermodynamics grid-scale energy storage that relies on molten salt to store energy be they renewable or fossil, as heat in molten salt and as cold in low-temperature anti-freeze until it's needed. The future is bright for Malta as renewable energy, the kind that needs storage, is in the rise.
What is more, Malta is working on a pilot plant, backed by $26 million from its first funding round, with backers like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg.
Malta’s solution is to store electricity as heat in high temperature molten salt and cold in a low temperature liquid for days, or even weeks, until it’s needed.
